HELPING TRANSPORT ACHIEVE SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

The greening of transport not only relates to the modes of transport which people actually use, but also the physical infrastructure that is required.

Road vehicles are undergoing decarbonization and railways are already electrified to a considerable extent. The sourcing of raw materials for, and construction & maintenance of, the road and rail network infrastructures however remain substantial environmental issues. These processes all have significant negative impacts, whether in terms of raw material sourcing, extraction, and use, or the degradation of land that is consumed on which roads and railways are constructed.

The solution to increasing demand for transport infrastructure? Travel less and/or fly sustainably. Aviation transport solutions only need infrastructure at departure and arrival points with connecting networks for any local, land-based travel.

“To serve communities, particularly with reduced infrastructure, through the provision of a safe, efficient, and adaptable general aviation aircraft solution.”

Our original mission statement, as set out above and framed more than 20 years ago, has stood the test of time. Although conceived when the environmental crisis was beyond the horizon, and climate issues were the concerns of academics or ahead-of-the-curve activists, our objective was to provide a transport solution for those often poorly served by surface-based alternatives.

Building more infrastructure for surface-based transport (roads and railways) may well be a short-term solution for increased demand. Even when all vehicles running on these networks produce zero CO2 emissions, there is and will be a high environmental cost in building and maintaining such road and rail systems.

The solution is a shift, some see a necessary paradigm shift, toward sustainable aviation – a transport solution that needs no physical infrastructure other than at its start- and endpoints.

Cormorant aims to play its role in this. Our still valid, though late last century, mission statement might now be neatly summarized: “Electric Aviation. For Everyone. Everywhere.”

THE CORMORANT’S DEVELOPMENT

More than 20 years ago the need for Cormorant was envisioned. The inspiration for its design lay in providing a STOL (Short Take-Off & Landing), multi-functional aircraft requiring minimal operating infrastructure. This dictated the requirement to operate safely and effectively on unpaved runways and from water. Communities and operators in remoter locations are a target demographic.

Cormorant reinterprets the design brief for a robust, go-anywhere, STOL aircraft by offering a safer, efficient, and adaptable solution.

An electric motor provides the opportunity for environmentally-friendly, high torque power source technology to coalesce with Cormorant’s high-lift aerodynamics.

When batteries are used as an energy storage solution, solar-recharging can enhance the electric Cormorant as an off-grid, versatile, low infrastructure requirement, 21st century transport solution.
